Like many other parts of the UK, heavy snowfall during the night. Well, it is winter! A rise in air temperature late morning, so bit of a thaw underway. I'll avoid the outdoor slush today and spend time checking our houseplants. We look after around 40 different house plants indoors. At this time of year, at least a weekly visit to each to them is advisable. The freezing cold outdoors in January often means centrally overheated indoor rooms! The plants shown here thrive in light places around the house, out of direct sunlight and drafts. Plants b, c and d do well on north east facing windowsills. Good idea to check potting compost isn't drying out, a finger test just below the compost helps. If dry, the plant needs watering, but not too much. Overwatering your indoor plants will weaken and even kill them, so gently does it. The other thing to look out for are winter plant pests e.g. Thrips, Mealybugs or fungus Gnats. Dealing with these is outlined on my blog page Plant Pests and Diseases.

a Hippeastrum  (Amaryllis)

b Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera)

c Cyclamen

d Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis)

e Paperwhites (Narcissus papyraceus)
