A few jobs today. Making most of the sunshine! Air temperature up a little from yesterday but the ground has had a good soaking over the past few days. We need some westerly breezes to dry the soil surface a little. Transplanting in very wet soil is not a good idea as the growing roots can't establish themselves so well, (unless they are bog plants) and can rot.
Anyway, it looks like a fine day so I'll have a chance to
- remove potted heathers from the front window-box (below). I'll let it dry out for a couple of days before adding a few potted up spring bulbs to mark the end of winter / beginning of spring. The heathers, (Calluna vulgaris), will be transferred into bigger pots using a mix of garden soil & ericaceous compost as they are acid loving plants.
- transplant a few potted spring plants into back garden spaces that I can find, including Cyclamen, (which have been sitting in a pool of rainwater for too long!). Their flowers & foliage & deep red fragile stems are a picture! Some beautiful potted-up miniature Iris are ready to go in (Iris reticulata 'JS Dijt'), & also a few pots of the brightest sunshine-yellow, Eranthis, hymalis)....are now ready for the garden.
- I'll also sort out a few vegetable & flower seeds, Broad Bean, 'Witkiem', tolerant of the colder weather as well as a quick maturing Sweet Pea, 'Winston Churchill', a large flowering multiflora type. These will be ready for sowing around the time of the New Moon at the end of the week, (this coming Friday, 28th February🌑).
Hope the Sun's shining wherever you are!
